You share a closet, a car and probably a phone charger. Somewhere in that life you need to hide a box of balloons, find an hour alone, and turn the bedroom into something they will walk into and stop.
The decorating is the easy part. The secret is the hard part. Here is how to keep it.
Hide the supplies where they never look
Think about the places your partner never opens: the bin of off-season clothes, the bottom of your gym bag, the trunk of your car, a friend's hallway closet. Keep everything together in one bag, so setup does not start with a treasure hunt.

You need about an hour, and it has to be an hour you can count on. A few that work:
- Their gym class, haircut or standing coffee with a friend
- A friend who invites them out (tell the friend, and nobody else)
- The evening, if you send them for takeout that is a little farther away than usual
- The morning, if you are the one who wakes up first
Whatever you pick, give yourself fifteen minutes more than you think you need.
Decorate in the order that saves time
- Clear the room. Laundry, chargers and paperwork go into the closet. A clear room looks twice as decorated.
- Make the bed. Fresh, smooth linen is the backdrop for everything else.
- Hang the backdrop or banner above the headboard first, while there is nothing in your way.
- Inflate and place the balloons. Biggest ones first, in the corners and beside the bed.
- Add the small details last: petals, flameless candles, a note on the pillow.
- Close the curtains and dim the lights, then stand in the doorway and look once more.
If you would rather not piece the room together from separate shops, a set built for exactly this keeps the colors matched and the bag small enough to hide:
