9 Boys Dinosaur Birthday Party Decorations That Fit Small Spaces

A small apartment, eight excited boys and a T. rex that needs somewhere to stand. Nine dinosaur ideas that look big without taking floor space.

Your living room is also the dining room, and eight excited boys are coming. Somehow a T. rex has to fit in there, and so does a table, a cake and a pile of coats.

The rule for small spaces is simple: decorate up and along the walls, not out into the floor. Here are nine ways to do it.

Use the walls

1. A jungle backdrop on the main wall. One big scene gives the room a focus and makes the space feel deeper.

2. A bunting across the top. Run it along the wall at the height of the door frame, where nothing can knock it down.

3. Wall stickers or paper cutouts. Dinosaur footprints climbing the wall, a paper volcano in the corner. Removable and flat.

Go vertical

4. Hang the foil dinosaurs. Jumbo foil balloons can hang from the ceiling or a curtain rod instead of standing on the floor.

5. Balloons in tall clusters. Tie them in columns of three or five and anchor them in a corner, rather than scattering them around.

6. Use the door. A banner or garland around the door frame makes the entrance feel like the start of the party.

Keep the floor free

7. Choose a small table. A small table with a cloth, a stack of plates and the cake is enough. Everything else can be served from the kitchen counter.

8. Skip floor decorations. In a small room, anything on the floor gets kicked, popped or tripped over within ten minutes.

9. Make room for the game. Roll up the rug, push the sofa against the wall and give the boys a clear stretch for a roaring contest or a dig-site tray.

A kit that was made for this

The dinosaur set puts most of the effect on the walls and in the air: a jungle backdrop, seven jumbo dinosaur foil balloons, a green bunting banner and green latex balloons, with tableware for twenty guests:

A few safety notes for small rooms

  • Keep real candles away from balloons and paper, and light them only for the song.
  • Pick up broken balloon pieces immediately; they are a hazard for young children.
  • Use removable hooks and tug-test every one.
  • Fill latex on the morning of the party; here is how long latex balloons stay inflated.

A small room can feel generous

A small room is also easier to make look finished. There is less to fill and every decoration is closer to the guests. Pick the wall, choose the colors, and leave the floor to the boys. For more ideas, browse our kids party kits.
