A bunch of silver chrome balloons on a weight in a bright room

The party is at home. The living room is small, the sofa is not going anywhere, and somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five people are coming. You want it to look festive for a sixtieth, but every decoration you add seems to make the room smaller.

Small rooms actually decorate beautifully. The trick is to choose a few places and leave the rest calm.

1. One focal wall

Pick the wall people see first when they walk in, and make that the only decorated wall. Everything else stays clear.

2. A banner or a big "60"

Center it on the focal wall at eye level. One clear message is worth more than ten small signs.

3. A balloon garland along one edge

Run a garland along the top of the focal wall or around a doorway. It adds volume without taking floor space.

4. A hanging foil curtain

A shimmering curtain behind the banner adds depth and catches the light, in a few inches of space.

5. A tidy table

One table for the cake and drinks, with a runner and nothing else on it until the food comes out.

6. A small cluster of balloons in one corner

Five to seven balloons in different sizes, anchored to the floor in a corner people do not walk through.

7. Warm lighting

Lamps on low and string lights along a shelf. Soft light makes a small room feel cozy instead of crowded.

8. Flowers in one spot

One generous vase on the cake table instead of small ones scattered around.

9. A photo corner

A few photos from sixty years on a string with clips, on a wall that is not the focal wall.

10. A matching kit

A coordinated set gives you the banner, the balloons and the colors in one go, sized for a home party.

Keep the palette to two colors and one metallic, and the room will look designed rather than full. For the table itself, read how to set a 60th birthday party table that looks polished, or browse our grown-up birthday kits.
